Fiona I started this group-read yesterday. I am looking forward to reading your review and then, of course, sharing our thoughts and feelings about the novel in The Feminist Readers' Network later on next month. Did I read somewhere that you made comparisons between this dystopian world to that of The Handmaid's Tale?

Bondama Very much so, Fiona... if you've started the book, by now you know that it's set in the "near future" when women have NO legal status at all. They are treated as household pets.

Elgin does NOT have Atwood's ability to make a character live and breathe, but the premise of this book is so very breathtaking, that after a while, one just doesn't care!!

Fiona Yes, and not being a U.S. citizen, as soon as I opened the book I needed to refer to another source to familiarise myself with the nineteenth amendment...

Bondama Exactly.
