it was amazing

One of the conventions of fantasy fiction is the "High Fantasy" or "Epic Fantasy" sub-genre wherein magic flows like water, the land is populated by strange, wonderful beings and the characters are darkest black or gleaming white.

This books is NOT that. Gritty, dirty and real. It took me a few dozen pages to really get into it, due to the profusion of characters introduced (which, alas, was not a problem towards the end).

The dialogue between all of the characters is absolutely incredible. Normally a good author will nail a few characters so well that the dialogue flows naturally between them; Abercrombie hits more like 90% plus.

Another unusual aspect to this work is the sense of tension which continues well past the traditional climax. No spoilers here but when the reader reaches "the end" of the plot, there are an extra eighty or so pages which keep you biting your nails. Really well done and impressive as heck. Will definitely check out his earlier works.
