People often say that the past is past, but as Patti Callahan Henry so beautifully illustrates in her novel, Coming Up for Air, unresolved issues never really fade away. Days after her mother’s death, the protagonist of this story discovers a facet of her mother that she never knew through a recently discovered journal chronicling her mother’s life. Delving into the past, the daughter is forced to review her own life and the direction it took. In rethinking past actions, the future is redefined in ways that seemed impossible mere months before. Does she heed the counsel her mother gave her in life, or search for truth in the written sentiments that were for so long hidden? This is a coming of age story for and about those who became adults long ago, but never really put away those feelings of a first lost love. A tragically beautiful tale of love lost, of hope regained, expertly told. I received this book free through Goodreads, First Reads.
