Another proto-Rebus, I still can't quite wrap my head around a Rebus who isn't always running on alcohol fumes. This is a fairly good book but becomes a bit cluttered as it goes along, and the Case of the Lifted Literature is resolved without any real incident or ceremony. Rebus is very well defined here, at the expense of a great many other characters ... one day I'm going to read all of these in order and actually track Rankin's evolution, and pinpoint the moment that he made it such a precise art.
