This book, although it provides the first ever look inside the head of a person with "locked-in" syndrome, was not the evocative masterpiece I'd hoped it would be. Although the author's situation (how one manages to write a novel while paralyzed) and the whole premise of the book are fascinating, the book is no better than ordinary. I haven't yet seen the movie, but I'm sure it made a much better film than it did a book, as one can use the camera, actors' expressions and music to make you feel things the words just didn't. Overall, far too boring to recommend to others.

Victoria I haven't seen the film either but seeing your review, I agree that it would make a better film than book.

Quiltgranny And I don't even want to see the film!

Doreen I have yet to read the book. I will read it eventually. I recently saw the film and it is exquisite. The filming and editing are magnificent. The film story differs from actual events because the mother of his children had a lot of control over the making of the movie. The movie also gives him three children instead of only the two he actually had. Again, nothing that interferes with the general uniqueness of the film.

Bunny I've watched the film. It's like the book. If the book is boring for you, then the movie will too.

Daniel Jon Kershaw I hated the book, enjoyed the film.

Doreen I commented here two years ago. I have read the book since then, and found the book easy to understand, after having seen the movie. There's no way I would have envisioned what 'locked-in syndrome' looks like, if I had not seen the film first.
