The inaugural book of my book group and a strange book indeed. A tale of 2 respectable ladies choosing debauchery and discomfort to escape a dissatisfying life of social norms.
Lauded as a modernist masterpiece by many it is surprising to have been written in 1940's.The only book which I can think which comes anywhere near to this fr its outlandishness is The Confederacy of Dunces- although the humour does not come close.
Jane Bowles life is as intriguing as the book, married to Paul Bowles they lived in Tangiers and both appeared to pursue same sex relationships. She became ill in her 40's and was unable to read or write as a result, so this is the only novel she wrote
