Wow, did we watch the same movie? If I was Papillon I would kill the judge, prosecutor then the director of that horrible film.

Definitely a book for guys. Not that I didn't like it, too, and not that I read chick lit or anything, but this is a book that is written by a manly man, written for men who loved adventure stories as children. I'm a big big fan of the movie (and I for sure don't like chick flicks), the book read like what it was--translated from the French. Much like vacuuming or sex when not in the mood, I was fine when I was in the middle of it, but never wanted to start. I had a hard time getting motivated to pick this book up whenever I'd put it down.
Another beef I had was with every other "character" (since this is a "true" story, after all) but Papillon. Everyone he meets is so understanding of his desire to be free. Every time he breaks out, he meets people who give him boats, clothes, food, lodging, lets him stay alone with a wife and daughter because he's trusted immediately, etc. Everyone is so horrified by what they know about the French penal system that of...more
