Compulsively readable and filled with smart characterizations, humor, and moments of pathos. Despite its many characters and constantly shifting perspective, I did find myself wishing the universe of Goon Squad was more diverse. Sometimes it seems like the only kinds of characters we read about anymore are young, twenty/thirty-somethings who are overeducated, underemployed, and on anti-depressants (or have children from a previous marriage who are), and so on. Still, there are so many intriguing characters in this book that I found myself hoping for a continuation of some sort.

Addendum (1/26/12): the more I think about this book, the less impressed I am by it. Much of what I wrote above stands but I am dropping my rating from four stars to three. Lots of fancy footwork here but not much substance.
