Mackie Doyle is different. Not just different from the other characters in the book, but different as a protagonist in general. Personally, I didn't immediately like him because he seemed sort of pathetic. However, as his relationships with his best friend Roswell and his sister Emily developed, I found myself liking him more and more. This creepy, beautiful story of a strange, unnatural child that was put in the place of a normal human child is riveting. The author definitely manages to include the creepy factor, which made it a more interesting read.
