I really want to give every Neal Stephenson book five stars, but then I couldn't distinguish my really-favorites from the ones that are just regular-awesome.

This series (the Baroque Cycle, available either as three big books or as ten regular-sized ones) is my really-favorite. It's attitudinally sci-fi, but set in the seventeenth century. It's a swashbuckler about Solomon's gold, counterfeiting, the roots of IT, alchemy, and many, many other things. Stephenson is a great storyteller.
