I read this extremely quickly one afternoon when I was supposed to be prepping for our move. The tone is foreign; I don't recognize the mid-60s in New England, having never experienced them. I come closer to recognizing the tiny insular situation of an academic department--particularly an English department--with a star professor. I come much closer to recognizing the different teaching styles and interactions of the characters, all intellectual, secretive, emotional, protective of themselves and others. The core of the book is in its emotional crisis, and as the conflict plays out, the emotions crest in a bizarre-to-me, reserved, small-girls'-school sort of way.
