A story of family, not of blood, but family nevertheless. In this one we meet Keeper a ten year old girl. Keeper lives on Oyster Ridge Road outside the town of Tater on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico in Texas. Keepers mom, Meggie Marie went into the Gulf to have her child and partially because of that and the fact that the last time Keeper saw her mom was when her mom swam into the Gulf and kept on going. Keeper believes that her mom was/is a mermaid. Meggie left when Keeper was just three and Keeper only remembers three things from that night, her mom singing Happy Birthday little mergirl, her mom giving her the golden charm, and her mom calling to her as she swam away:"Keeper, Keeper". Keeper was left with Signe, who along with Dogie and Mr Beauchamp are all the family Keepers ever known. Things go terribly wrong for Keeper one day and she angers everyone in her life. She feels she needs to get help from the only other grown up she can think of, her mom. Of course she believes her mom's a mermaid so this entails going out into the Gulf all on her own in a small boat to find her mom. Keeper comes up with a plan that she's sure will work but the tides and rip currents have different plans.
