Jill's review
Theft: A Love Story
by Peter Carey
It's difficult to say, because it's been well reviewed. Sometimes I get in the car and am absolutely enthralled with the book, but most others, I find myself drifting. Every 3rd chapter or so, Carey writes from the POV of the mentally handicapped brother--and the 1st time I heard it, I thought the narrator had lost his marbles. Maybe the transitions are better illustrated in print. Some books are just hard to listen to, but a gem to read!
your initial review of this book inspired me to create my "threw it across the room shelf" but I have to admit, I admire your stick-to-itness!

It started out well. I was not only enjoying the book, I was interested. It's definately a book that I couldn't have envisioned myself reading. I would have been confused by the switch of narrator, had it not been for the reader's voice alterations. I would have stopped by chapter 20 (out of 60).
I have heard Carey is brilliant. If another opportunity arises for me to pick up another of his works, I will...cautiously.
If any Carey-lovers out there have a suggestion for me, I'll add it to my "to-read" pile.
And if anyone wants a free copy, write me, and I'll give you my address and leave my car door open.
