A family that has special powers, at least from the mother's side of the family. Each child receives their powers on their 13th birthday ( the beginning of the teen years). The story centers around a daughter who has just turned thirteen and is trying to discover what her 'savvy' is. Unfortunately, her parents are far from home because of a car accident. She and her sibling and friends have to help figure out what is happening and also, get to see her parents. An unusal twist to the coming of age story, discovering what is special about yourself and how to handle it.
A sweet if sad ending, and a segue to the next volume. Good story for pre-teens.
