The New Yorker had a fascinating article many years back about the relationship Carver had with his editor. It seems that this editor was crucial in developing Carver's minimalist style, though as years went by, Carver broke with him, possibly with the support of Tess Gallhager. It was really interesting--worth tracking down if you can.
