I won this on Goodreads! I know we're not supposed to "judge a book by its cover," but when this one came in the mail, I fell in love with the book jacket and couldn't wait to get started! The story was as rich and elegant as the cover promised, so I was not disappointed. Is it life-changing? No. Is it deep and philosophical? No. But it IS entertaining and engrossing. Daisy Goodwin has written a wonderful story about the Gilded Age, a fascinating time period, that bridges the moneyed cultures of America and England. Classic "new money vs. old money" conflict set among actual historical facts and personalities-- it's great fun to get lost in the lives of these stuffy Victorian characters and those of their rebellious American counterparts.
