S. D. Nelson, a Native American artist, illustrates his biography of Black Elk. Unfortunately, children rarely hear the history from the viewoint of the Indian and Nelson describes and illustrates the injustices dealt to the tribes, using both his own artwork and historic photographs. The spiritual element--the Native American veneration of the cycle of life--is presented in a way that young readers can understand.

The book concludes with the author's notes about Black Elk and about the book, a timeline, a bibliography, and an index.
