Everytime I read a book like this about the privations of wartime - the fear - the inhumanity - I realize how blessed I am to have never had to live through such things. The stories of how a few people took risks to save others - just because it was the right thing to do - are inspiring. Sometimes the flow of the story was interrupted as the author brought in ideas about nature and zookeeping but it still was interesting. I learned a lot about the takeover of Poland during WWII and that is an area I hadn't known much about.
