A fascinating story about an extraordinary man. Louis was a track star and close to a four minute miler. He competed in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin and actually met Hitler. After joining the Army Air Force, Louis becomes a bombardier in Hawaii and crashes in the Pacific. He spends forty-seven days on raft, only to be captured by the Japanese to spend two brutal years in a POW camp. The entire time his family and the U.S. Government thought he was dead. After Japan was defeated and Louis was freed, he soaked in his fame as a celebrity POW. He eventually began drinking too much and his hostility and resentment grew. In the late 40’s Louis had a conversion at a Billy Graham crusade and spent the rest of his life as an evangelist and speaker. He eventually went back to Japan and met most of his captors. The writing is not the greatest and the story does drag a bit at times. Nevertheless, a great story of perseverance and positive thinking during times of trouble.
