Hamlet was my favorite Shakespeare for a long time... and then I read Macbeth. Being an incredibly ambitious person, I'm not sure exactly what it is I like about Macbeth - maybe it's the Scottish thing, maybe it's the way that three women essentially control the entire play, maybe it's because I love the name Macduff. Stylistically, I actually like the writing in Macbeth more than Hamlet, possibly because Hamlet has been quoted so many times that it seems a bit hokey, whereas so many of the beautiful moments in Macbeth are still brutal and piercing. There's something about reading this that's like walking in very cold air. I've never been so alert/awake/aware while reading another Shakespeare play as I was for this one.
