James is a lonely teenager who believes he prefers it that way. Over the course of the novel, his character engages in a lot of self-reflection while simultaneously alienating a lot of others. Cameron masterfully captures the self-isolation and condescension that are known to pop up in one's adolescence. I enjoyed the sense of humor throughout the novel - James makes many quips and observations that I would have loved to have read in my own high school years. It didn't hurt that the audiobook's narrator was pitch perfect with his wry, almost lackadaisical delivery. Both honest and maddening, Someday This Pain Will Be Useful To You is a superb teen novel told in a deliberate way.
