This French-Algerian existentialist story is stark and simple, and highly enjoyable because of it. The "protagonist" is a mystery and the manner in which the story unfolds with such little input from him is tragic. Why did he shoot this arab, why did he not mourn his mother, and why does he offer such little resistance against a state and society hell-bent on crucifying him? The first novel I ever read in French, so I have a soft spot for it.
