Dark, haunting, and downright terrifying. This, for me at least, was scarier than most horror novels. What do you do when, after considering yourself to be the last person on earth, somebody else comes along? The world has been completely destroyed from war: Ann Burden is the last one left, at fifteen years old. She farms plants and a small group of animals, keeping herself busy and filling her days with chores and some reading. On a spring day, she sees smoke rising on the horizon. Sure enough, a man makes his way to her valley. She hides and watches him, unsure of the next move to make, when he dives into a toxic stream, getting himself a serious case of radiation poisoning. Ann takes the high road and cares for him, feeds him, and shares with him until things spiral out of her control... And into his.
