I'm an English major who never read Moby Dick, but I did recognize the iconic characters on the periphery of Una's (Ahab's wife) epic. And what a story it is! Written in the vernacular of Herman Melville and Ralph Waldo Emerson, I learned much about 19th century Nantucket, whaling, and typical hardships of that time. Historic characters believably showed up in this novel, but Una was always central. I made a friend in her.

Babette I just finished this book - Ahab's Wife - and like your succinct review. I enjoyed much of the same elements as you did.
I too am an English major who never finished reading Moby Dick, but completed enough to pick up the references. I think it is time for me to return to Melville and finish the job.

Did we slip through the literary classics cracks with Moby Dick? I admit, I've never read a Russian classic, either--nor finished a Dickens novel. I hope I don't offend, but I also don't understand the "ga ga" over Jane Austen. Maybe I just don't want to tune my brain to 18th and 19th century vernacular. I do think I'll read another Naslund novel. Here's to the fraternity of EMs.

Moxiemama You skipped too many classes if you think this is a well-written book!
