Poetic and impressionistic. The plot can be difficult to follow, because of the episodic nature of the novel - and the episodes are not in sequence. And the plot is not always apparent either. Rather, the conflict, and whatever resolution comes, seems theoretical/existential. The men are defined by the women who surround them; the women have somewhat more "personality" in my opinion. Though, in many ways, each primary character is boiled down to his or her sexuality. Full of lust. Full of angst. A good read.
