I'm surprised this book is not rated higher on this site. It's a well written coming of age story of a biracial girl who has to learn not only her own identity but how society views her. She learns to accept what she cannot change and to move past prior events in her life.
The pacing and character development were handled deftly and I liked the fact that the story was not told from a linear perspective. There are quite a few but not too many points of view.
Now you could say that the dramatic parts of this novel are oversimplified, but taken as a whole the book is craftily written and I would enjoy reading more from the author. This is a very good book for a first effort.
