This one reminded my slightly of the Uglies series but more violent. It took me a long time to warm up to Katniss and I'm still not sure if I like her a whole lot but I don't hate her. What I really liked about this book was how they depicted the games portion. The author did a great job writing the strategies of various contestants as well as getting the reader personally invested in his two main characters. I found much of the dialogue to be relatively cheesy. I feel like many authors don't capture the voice of teenagers unless they are using sarcasm and that makes it hard for me to believe these are real teens and not just cookie cutter characters. My favorite part about this book was that Katniss completed the Hunger Games. She didn't stage an uprising halfway through and get the other contestants to rally to her cause, she completed it because she had to, and yet managed to not loose herself in the process. Watching that struggle and the resulting character growth was the best part of the book for me and the thing that will keep me reading the next one.
