really liked it
bookshelves: nonfiction, 2011-favorites, written-by-women
Read from June 13 to 26, 2011

We went to Hawaii on our honeymoon, and I knew just enough about the history of the United States' colonization and takeover of the islands to be a little uncomfortable with it. This, like a few of the Vowell books I've read, is slightly less personal and slightly more "THIS IS AN INTERESTING AND HORRIBLE THING I LEARNED" which, legit, and it's obviously good and interesting and Vowell is deft with it but it's also not the gut punch or jugular strike it should be. Given how horrifically the US treated the people there, I mean.
