I've been looking for a very short, very interesting novel to teach to my students just before novel writing month. I think I've found a winner. It's just 120 pages and is told from the perspective of a gopher snake held in captivity. There is a very clear antagonist and a very simple straight forward plot structure (perfect for plotting on a "plot roller coaster". The language, however, is rich enough to qualify as "complex text" (a requirement of the common core). I think it will be interesting and engaging to students - what kid wouldn't love a snake as a protagonist?
