i really like adrian tomine, and fans of his works will not be disappointed by this tale. for those who haven't read him, shortcomings is a great start -- its filled with the ambiguous morality and ultra-sincerity that i've found in his other graphic novels. this book, like all of his works, is about human connection and the confusion that results from it... unlike his other writings, shortcomings uses those connections to springboard a discussion of racial identity. its a compelling read, and if it doesn't have the power of 'summer blonde' then that's probably due to the swiftness of the storytelling. definitely recommended.
