Read by Samuel L. Jackson! And it's free for a limited time at Audible. w00t!
Pure, dead, brilliant. Mansbach has got his parody spot on. Jackson does a wonderful job of reading the straight bedtime-book lines in the perfect soothing-parent voice, and in vocalizing his growing consternation and frustration. Totally awesome, although I don't expect to many non-parents to enjoy the genius of the thing.

I used this to demonstrate the audio books capability of the Kindle. We laughed with tears running down our faces.

I just had the privilege and delight of playing this for two coworkers, one of whom hadn't heard of the book. Tears running out of all our eyes from the laughter.

This book is such a scream, and I agree with you about SLJ's reading. I also rather enjoyed the Werner Herzog reading on YouTube, but it was pretty different. It would be interesting to have more interpretations and compare them all side by side.

I'm not a parent -- in fact I don't have much to do with children at all and don't really like them -- but I loved the book.
Meaghan, it is a wise person who knows she doesn't like children and manages to keep away from them. It's really fun, isn't it?
I actually get along with small children reasonably well in situations where I have to be around them (such as at family gatherings). But I just generally find them extremely annoying -- I have sensory integration issues and the noise they make drives me nuts.I'm pretty sure I would make a really crappy parent, and even when I reach the part of my life where I'm able to financially support a child, I would think long and hard about having one. I wouldn't want to mess up the kid.
Meaghan, I think you'd manage to raise a great kid, but that's no reason to attempt it. Really, I don't think people should have kids unless they can't stand not to.Peter, I haven't. I'll have to look for that.

Kaethe wrote: "It is the best audio book performance ever."My nephew, like his mother, grandfather, great-grandmother, and me is just a night-owl. His mother has to go through this very similar routine with him every night. I've experienced it myself when he's spent the night. It really is, as you say, the best audio book performance ever!
For me the quiet time of reading to the kids each night was delightful in general. But oh, those nights when someone wasn't getting sleepy and my day had been long enough already...
