bookshelves: murder-mystery, challenge-reads
Read from August 14 to 28, 2011

All in all a good premise... but lengthy, drawn out, and overly descriptive in places. I'm tempted to now watch the film to see the difference, but as I abhor Brian Dennehy, I'll have to think long and hard.

Arkady Renko, chief investigator for the Moscow militia, is handed the curious case of 3 murder victims found in Gorky Park. His investigations lead him into trouble with his own militia, the KGB, his wife, and ultimately finds him in New York City. And on the way he loses all his friends. The body count is almost as high as that of Starship Troopers!

Smith has gone on to write a series of books involving Renko. I will probably read the next one just to see how he inveigles his way into Russia.
