Excellent and absorbing history of the Comanches. The author lacks some of the niceties of modern day anthropology where the words 'primitive' and 'civilized' have long since disappeared but he gains by being a straight shooter in describing how brutal the Comanches were. By the end the sadness of the Comanche defeat, forced to live on reservations, has real impact. Gwynne uses Cynthia Ann Parker and her son Quanah's remarkable lives as a framework here but in fact this is a narrative that covers 250 years of Indian history.
