It's been at least a decade since I read Crystal Singer for the first time, but I still get a little excited about it every time I reread it. Unfortunately, it's clear from the vantage point of adulthood that it is not up to my usual standards for writing style and is a bit dated. I probably wouldn't recommend this to anyone who isn't already a McCaffrey fan, or enjoys the feel of late twentieth-century sci-fi and can overlook somewhat stilted characterization.
