it was amazing
bookshelves: literature, covers-i-like, ten-star-books, would-love-to-discuss

I'm not sure why I loved this book so much. Not a lot happens in it. Girl does a lot of walking in nasty weather, teaches her little brothers useful skills, gets nosy, gets beaten, sleeps with her BFF. Not in that order. I think it is the sparing evocations of the long history of the Dolly clan, their mythology, their code of honor, hundreds of generations of similar people with similar pain. Ree is both similar and unique, and although it doesn't seem like it, she keeps catching breaks. Not from luck but from pluck, and sheer strength of character that is impressive and almost unlikely.
