Really enjoyed this book. Dark Urban Fantasy. Main character is an alcoholic living in a post apocalyptic Louisiana. Due to terrorist attacks and chemical spills Fairies, that apparently had always been in the swamps, have now mutated into creatures big enough to bite humans. Fairy bites are poisonous to humans causing everything from instant death to slow insanity and then death. Also humans that have been bitten are contagious so must be locked up in camps. There are few select people who are naturally immune to fairy bites. Our main character, Anabelle Lee, is one of them. This horrifying change in the world happened when she was a teen and the world didn't quite have the hang of how dangerous and deadly the Fairies were and she and her sister went camping...she survived her sister didn't. This begins her downward spiral, we pick her up quite a few years later after a number of other tragic events have led her to boozing her way through the horrors of living in this severely altered world where she makes a good living but the emotional/mental cost of what she does is often quite high. This is, at its heart, a murder mystery, with really interesting characters in what I thought was a really well developed world. I tend to like reading about very flawed characters. I do wish the secondary characters had been a little more flawed actually. Her current boyfriend and ex-boyfriend both feel a little too perfect. Even when her Ex is being a total A-hole he's sort of being a perfect A-hole. But I think this is a minor complaint and if given the chance I expect those characters will have their chance to develop a bit more. Overall I really enjoyed this book but seriously it is dark so if you don't like that don't read this one.
