This is a wonderfully transgressive book, where boys don't do 'boy' stuff and girl don't do 'girly' stuff, and that's what's so great about it. This led me to wonder why we always seem to leave it to authors of gay fiction to challenge gender boundaries.

Tiny Cooper is the most wonderful comic character I've read in a long time. I'd love to see him depicted on screen, though I fear a movie adaptation of this book may well come out looking something like Glee.

The concert at the end was always going to be the climax - we knew that from the start - and that's when I started to get a bit weary of the story, but only because I've seen this done before. (Recently by Chris Liley, in Summer Heights High.) The ending was therefore a little unsatisfying for me, but I wouldn't let this put me off recommending the book, especially to younger readers, who would have a different sense of 'done before'.
