I think I've actually read too many of these books now - the Western traveler's perspective on an Eastern culture. But it's perspective transformation that really interests me - what people learn through their interactions with foreignness, what changes they find in themselves. I enjoyed Deborah's story about herself and admired her bravery in completely embracing the culture - even to the extent of marrying an Afghani man that her friends set her up with.
