I was twelve years of age when I chopped off my hair, dressed as a boy, and set off to save my family from impending ruin. I made it as far as the front gate.
With an opening line like this, you can't help but be enchanted by Kat, Incorrigible. This story revolves around twelve-year-old Katherine Ann Stephenson who recently discovered that she has inherited her mother's magical talents. But when her eldest sister Elissa's intended fiancé, the sinister Sir Neville, shows a dangerous interest in Kat's magical potential; her other sister, Angeline, wreaking romantic havoc with her own witchcraft; and a highwayman lurking in the forest, even Kat's reckless heroism will be tested to the upmost.
What I love most about Kat, Incorrigible is our heroine, Kat. She may only be twelve but she has the courage of a lion and the tenacity of a horse. After all, her ultimate dream is to be kidnapped by a highway man. She is stubborn, determined but most of all, she stands up for what she believes in. The dialogue she has with her sisters are peppered with sarcasm and wittiness and I especially love her interactions with her stepmother. While her stepmother's certain actions can be viewed as deplorable, I do pity her sometimes. She is after all, the long-suffering stepmother to 3 of the most stubborn and quick-thinking girls in 18-century London.
Other characters are equally entertaining. Angeline and Elissa are Kat's two older sisters. One fancies herself as a martyr for true love while the other wishes to use witchcraft to help their family, but fails spectacularly. A particular charming young man in the story is Federick Carlyle. I won't want to spoil anything but *swoon*
Magic is abound in Kat, Incorrigible but it's mostly of the "fun" sort. Kat trying to undo spells, fixing things, etc. Though, Kat must contend and battle wits with Mr. Gregson and Lady Fotherington, her mother's former colleagues. Will she succeed? Who knows, but Kat's interactions with them will have you rooting for her all the way.
Kat, Incorrigible wraps things up nicely, but still leaves room for a sequel which has already been confirmed. Kat is full of incorrigible charm, making her an ideal narrator, and that's why I can't wait for more of her adventures!
