I didn't hate this book, although it was a struggle to get through it at times. I liked more or less all the main characters, and the overall plot was interesting to me (as I preferred the historical fiction parts of Cryptonomicon to the present-day parts). But there were long, long stretches where I felt the author was just being clever and/or entertaining himself - which is fine if you write fanfic, but for the love of GOD, THIS NOVEL IS AT LEAST 300 pages LONGER THAN IT NEEDS TO BE, EDITING PLS!!! Also, the nested letters/codes made it incredibly hard at times to keep track of the already-complex machinations of the characters.

So, many, many flaws, and not for everyone. But the thing about Stephenson is that even his crappiest books have certain images and ideas that stick with you long after. I definitely would like to read some nonfiction about this time period now.
