Admittedly, I read this book after watching clips from the musical, downloading the soundtrack and completely falling in love with the music. But the story itself is so haunting, and represents a lot of common issues that are still relevant with children today. Though not so dramatic due to the repression of a lot of sexual education, the actions of the characters are relatable for everyone to some extent, as everyone has had pressure to perform well at school, peer pressure, and pressure from a partner to engage in sexual activity. The story follows the live of several school children, some of whom overcome their emotional obstacles, and others who crack under the pressure. A beautiful play, one that I will definitely be reading again.

Carson I also decided to read this after discovering the music. I have Wedekind's on ebook and the musical script book in print. At one time, there was a several month period where I listened to the soundtrack all the way through every night. Weirdly, when I'm feeling down, I read this book. Its beauty makes me happy.
