Penguin put out a whole series of these tiny paperbacks. I ended up reading this one mostly because I was enjoying Julian Barnes' novel Flaubert's Parrot, which is about Flaubert's life, the nature of history, and the parrot Flaubert used for the one in this story. The story itself is a quite beautiful study of devotion taken to absurd, mad ends.
