But I'm unfortunately not, and so I read the whole thing. What sounded like a relatively interesting Depression-era story about conflict between rich people at an Adirondack "retreat" and the community of locals who resent but depend on them ended up being a soap opera with unlikeable characters and a lackluster ending. I've heard great things about Russell Banks's other books, and the writing in this one made me think he's capable of better, but I may need to be persuaded to give him another try. <br/><br/><a href="http://www.goodreads.com/review/list/244914?utm_medium=api&utm_source=blog_review">View all my reviews.</a>
