This was a haunting book. It was very well written, and it deals with an important and overlooked part of history though it never tries to be more than an excellent work of fiction. The author does not shy away from the terrible and the horrific, but he does it in a way that is never gratuitous. He also does an amazing job of making his main character sympathetic to the reader, though he has done horrible things. He makes him human, not a monster or a stereotype or one-dimensional. He is real, and at one time, repulsive, another time, endearing.
