WOW. This is one of those books that you aren't ready to commit to read yet but sample the first chapter and 2 days later you're closing the back cover. All other books went on hold as I was gripped by this emotionally raw, tragic and captivating story of how one split second decision born of young innocence can change a life forever. It's about first love, heart-wrenching loss, forgiveness, redeptemption, motherhood, sacrifice...the list could go on and on. It was a deep and moving story that makes you smile (and remember) the beauty and sweetness of first love (and first best friendship). The author did a great job of fully developing deep and flawed characters that you become invested in quickly. The pace is good and the plot is filled with enough twists and turns to keep you reading. I cried openly and that doesn't happen very often for me - but I did feel that invested in these characters and what they were experiencing. All throughout you find yourself pausing to think what you would do in the circumstances - as a teenager, as a woman, as a mother, as a wife or daughter - all of it. The reason for 4 stars versus 5 is related more to certain characters reactions to specific events and my personal opinions about those. When an author writes characters this well-defined, she can't leave room for out-of-character or questionable reactions. But this complaint is minor and nothing that takes away from the ultimate beauty of the story. Add this one to your list. I wish we had read it for book club! I'm especially interested to hear the opinions of any mothers of young children (points at Bridgett).
