Naylor returns to Appalachia for this story of two 7th grade girls - one from the Hollows of Kentucky, one from Lexington - who go on an "exchange" to their respective homes and schools. Both must struggle with stereotypes and differences as they live with each other, and each faces a crisis in the family and must lean on the other. Catherine, the girl from Lexington, is less well-drawn than Ivy June. As always, Naylor is an excellent writer, and her sense of place - particularly in the more interesting rural setting - is lively. The story however, may not be intersting to students used to a more lively or plot-driven story. Best for girls grades 4-6 who enjoy books like The Penderwicks or who enjoy character driven realistic fiction.
