This was one of my very favorite books when I was a kid. It's prequel "Juniper" is also good. I just reread it, and it's just as good as I remember it. It's about a little girl who goes to live with the town "witch" (who the town priest constantly preaches against, though she is the one the villagers turn to for healing and medical care) when her grandmother dies. The woman who wrote it is apparently somewhat of a historian of pagan pre-christian traditions. It's a quick read, and very worthwhile.
