Biting satire. I have some discomfort with the author's seemingly cavalier treatment of some Jewish characters but it is impossible for me to know if this was meant to be part of the satire or is part of the author's own prejudices. Still the writing is brilliant and prescient (written in 1936.) A quote from one of the journalist characters, "I lost that game. It suddenly struck me that every move in chess was old and had already been played by someone. Perhaps our history has already been played too, and we shift our figures with the same moves to the same checks as in times long past."
