This book is about the life of a woman named Theodora who from humble beginnings and many twists in her life, becomes empress, the wife of Justinian I.

While this book took me a very long time to get through, my attention was held most of the time. The fact Theodora was a real person makes this historical fiction even better. It's an era that I don't normally find myself interested in, so this was a good challenge for me.

Theodora is well-written and leaves you constantly wondering what on earth can happen next. The poor girl starts out at a dancing school, which teaches girls how to act, dance and sing. The school's main goal is to get girls ready for a life not only on the stage, but in turning tricks to keep a living. Not the best beginning for a girl.

Overall, I don't think this is a book I will ever need to read again, but it wasn't bad.

*** = glad I read it.
