2.5 stars for effort.

An interesting idea. Unfortunately, it wasn't so well executed as it could have been. The characters--even the narrator himself--felt detached, never allowing the reader to get to know them and, thus, care about them. The story itself was irregularly-paced. It would have bursts of action followed by pages and pages of dry reading. It felt entirely too random and sporatic. I struggled to get through it. All in all, not a memorable book.

Caroline Bartels Interesting, I have a hard time getting through books with any fantasy elements (but I make myself read them because my students like them) and I read this one in two days. I thought the whole story moved well, though the ending was a little disappointing. It reminded me a lot of Helen Grant's The Vanishing of Katharina Linden.
